Craig Benson, Audie Murphy, is a civilian working for the Navy who helps arm and supply guerrilla insurgents in the Philippines. His main goal, however, is to find his wife Ruth Benson, Dolores Michaels, from whom he was separated by the Japanese invasion.

Coming ashore, Benson kills two Japanese soldiers who ambushed his contact Sgt. Marty Sackler, Gary Crosby. The two soon encounter a band of dubious guerrillas led by a renegade American M’Keever (not part of the main cast), who desires the weapons Benson brought but has concealed them. Realizing M’Keever is a dead end, Benson and Sackler clash with him, and the real guerrillas—led by Julio Fontana, Alejandro Rey, and an American boxer stranded in the Philippines, Tiger Blair, Ivan Dixon—defeat M’Keever’s group and kill him.

Benson agrees to arm Fontana’s guerrilla band and becomes involved with a plan to evacuate a group of American civilians to Australia. Among them is his wife Ruth, Dolores Michaels, who believed him dead and who has formed a close bond with Fontana. Benson soon sees Ruth in Fontana’s presence and must confront the complicated loyalty between his wife and the guerrilla leader. He continues to guide Fontana and his men, mapping out where the weapons are stored and preparing for a submarine to carry them to safety.

As the evacuation progresses, Ruth openly tells Craig she does not intend to leave with him and plans to keep fighting alongside Fontana. The group boards a shipwreck they hoped would be a safe refuge, arming themselves with the seized guns. The Japanese pressure intensifies, and the survivors mount a defense that briefly pushes back the attackers, killing several Japanese forces who come aboard.

The tension rises when the Japanese offer a surrender deal: Benson would be shot, while others would gain limited freedom. Fontana refuses the terms and defends Benson at gunpoint, aided by Ruth. In the chaos, Sackler attempts to swim toward his hut but is attacked and eaten by a shark, a brutal reminder of the peril surrounding them. The next day, Japanese mortars close in, and Benson goes missing, leaving the others to wonder about his fate.

A fierce night of combat follows as the Japanese swarm the shipwreck. Benson returns with guerrilla support and overwhelming force, turning the tide against the invaders. After the battle, he shares a quiet, bittersweet moment with Ruth; she insists she wants to come with him, but their path remains uncertain. They finally decide to leave the immediate danger behind, climbing into a raft together and making for the submarine that will take them toward Australia and the hope of a tenuous peace.
