The Karamazov family unfolds around Elder Zosima, with Alyosha Karamazov Carlo Simoni absorbing the monk’s counsel. Dmitrij Fëdorovic Karamazov [Corrado Pani] accuses his father, [Salvo Randone] Fëdor Pàvlovic Karamazov, of withholding money to chase Grushenka, the woman who has captured his heart. Their mother, Agrafena Aleksàndrovna Lea Massari, watches with wary eyes as the two men spar for her favor. The father counters, alleging Dmitrij used funds to court Katerina Ivànovna Carla Gravina and is only after Grushenka’s affections. Tensions flare as both father and son press for Grushenka’s hand, while Ivan Karamazov [Umberto Orsini] and Alyosha try to keep violence at bay; Ivan, a thinker who questions life’s meaning, opposes their father but rejects violence.

Backstory and fragile loyalties complicate the present. Dmitrij was once engaged to Katerina Ivànovna, who came to him in financial distress a year earlier. He gave her the money and let her go, an action that surprised her with unexpected generosity and led them toward engagement. Yet Dmitrij’s doubts linger, and he suspects Katerina’s affections truly lie with Ivan rather than with him. Their bond fractures after a bitter confrontation in which Grushenka humiliates Katerina, yet Dmitrij still owes Katerina money—she once lent him 3000 rubles for his aunt’s Moscow trip, funds he used on Grushenka. In a drunken letter to Katerina, he claims he is trying to gather the money and threatens to harm his father if he fails. He even tries to obtain money from a lawyer and a forester, while Alyosha pleads with their father to provide the funds, only to be met with a stubborn refusal as the father desires Grushenka too.

A plan, a journey, and a web of tension. Ivan heads toward Moscow, partly to sort his feelings about Katerina and partly to avoid becoming entangled in any possible crime. Smerdyakov [Antonio Salines] hints that Dmitrij intends to kill their father, leaving Ivan free to escape the consequences by leaving early in the morning. Meanwhile, Grushenka is summoned by her ex-husband Samsonov and departs, claiming her love for Dmitrij was brief. Dmitrij storms to Grushenka’s residence, where her servants reveal her exact whereabouts, and he spends the evening at the inn, enjoying music and dance with her.

A rare moment of penitence gives way to catastrophe. In a quiet impulse, Dmitrij prays for the recovery of the person he harmed, hoping she remains alive. The innkeeper overhears the prayer, calls the police, and Dmitrij is arrested. He denies killing his father, admitting only that jealousy spurred him to violent thoughts but he ultimately changed his mind. The blood on his hands is later revealed to come from Smerdyakov, whom he struck in the garden; the money found on him belongs to Katerina, not to his father. Dmitrij is imprisoned, and Grushenka pledges to wait for him. Alyosha visits Dmitrij in prison, convinced of his innocence, while Ivan wrestles with creeping doubts and escalating guilt.

Dark truths surface in the sickroom and redefine responsibility. Ivan visits the ill Smerdyakov, who confesses that he murdered their father on Ivan’s supposed orders, claiming they had discussed such a plan before Ivan’s departure. Smerdyakov also reveals himself as Ivan’s half-brother and hints at money hidden in the house. Horrified, Ivan contemplates taking Smerdyakov to court the next day, even as fear and remorse threaten to overwhelm him.

The trial scene pulls apart loyalties and motives. At Dmitrij’s trial, initial optimism gives way to a shifting narrative: Katerina paints a favorable picture of her relationship with Dmitrij, omitting the incriminating drunken letter that could implicate him. Grushenka implicates Smerdyakov while casting doubt on Katerina. Ivan confesses to having instigated Smerdyakov’s act of patricide, and as his mental state worsens, he is escorted from the courtroom. Katerina seizes the moment to present the damning letter to the judge. Dmitrij’s defense falters, and the verdict arrives: he is found guilty and sentenced to hard labor in Siberia, while Grushenka remains by his side, signifying a shared, unresolved fate.
