Spoilers ahead
Pre-World War II Paris is crowded with illegal refugees, trying to evade deportation. One of them is Dr. Ravic, Charles Boyer who practices medicine illegally under a false name, quietly helping other refugees with limited resources and growing resolve.
Ravic saves Joan Madou, Ingrid Bergman, from suicide after the sudden death of her lover, a moment that marks the start of a tense, fated connection between them. They become involved, but Ravic is deported, and Joan, left behind, becomes the mistress of Alex, Stephen Bekassy, a very wealthy man.
Ravic returns, still seeking revenge against the Nazi officer Ivon Haake, Charles Laughton, who tortured Ravic’s beloved to death. Von Haake is in Paris, in civilian dress, for some unknown, sinister purpose.
