Roman Aloys Bohnen (1901‑11‑24 – 1949‑02‑24) was an American actor whose career spanned the transformative years of American theatre and the golden age of Hollywood. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, he was the son of portrait painter Karl Bohnen and grew up in modest circumstances, a fact that instilled in him a fierce work ethic. After earning a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1923—where he also cheered on the football team—Bohnen cut his theatrical teeth in regional companies in St. Paul and Chicago, eventually securing a five‑year tenure with the acclaimed Goodman Theatre. It was there he met fellow performer Hildur Ouse, whom he married in 1930. The couple relocated to New York City, where Bohnen debuted on Broadway in As Husbands Go (1931) and soon became a core member of the influential Group Theatre. Over the next nine years he originated roles in Clifford Odets’ masterpieces such as Waiting for Lefty and Awake and Sing!, earning a reputation for generosity, humor, and tireless dedication to ensemble work.
