Ajin follows Nagai Kei, Takeru Satoh, a quiet student who suddenly learns he is an Ajin after a fatal traffic accident. In this world, a tiny subset of humanity possesses immortality and the power to recover from any fatal wound in a matter of seconds. This secret ability sets Ajin apart from ordinary people and places them on a dangerous edge between exploitation and fear.
At the core of Ajin’s danger are the black ghosts—powerful, combat-ready entities that exist alongside their Ajin counterparts. These ghosts are nearly invincible to ordinary harm, displaying extraordinary strength and razor-sharp teeth and claws. They aren’t all the same, either. Some black ghosts follow the Ajin’s directions with minimal autonomy, while others, like Kei’s, exhibit more independent, strategic actions. This variance in intelligence and will makes every encounter tense, because even a single misstep can lead to catastrophic results for those who understand or underestimate these beings.
Public perception of Ajin is deeply hostile. Rather than being protected by governments, Ajin are often hunted, imprisoned, or exploited. The authorities claim to safeguard these extraordinary individuals, but in practice they treat Ajin as expendable resources for cruel experiments. Because Ajin can regenerate endlessly, governments see them as an endless supply of organs and bodies to test new weapons and procedures—an ethical abyss that drives many Ajin to resist or escape capture.
Into this volatile landscape steps Satou, Go Ayano, a relentless and dangerous figure who has escaped government custody and seeks revenge against those who would weaponize his kind. Satou’s return ignites a high-stakes conflict between the state and Ajin, forcing Kei into a perilous moral crossroads. Kei, who wants nothing to do with a rising Ajin–human war, finds himself caught between the instinct to stay alive and the pressure to act.
Reluctantly, Kei makes a dangerous calculation. He agrees to collaborate with Japanese governmental agents in a bid to secure his own freedom from experimentation. This uneasy alliance places Kei at the center of competing agendas and moral ambiguities, as he becomes a pivotal ally in the government’s efforts to neutralize Satou while attempting to keep his own humanity intact. The negotiations and covert operations unfold under the watchful eyes of the state, represented by Yudai Chiba as Okuyama and Tetsuji Tamayama as Yu Tosaki, whose roles push Kei deeper into a world where loyalty is costly and survival depends on making the right, sometimes painful, choices.
As the plot advances, the line between ally and adversary becomes increasingly blurred. Kei’s cautious cooperation with the authorities does not erase the danger surrounding him; instead, it amplifies the tension as Satou’s methods and Ajin abilities challenge the limits of what his government can tolerate. The story broadens from a personal struggle for autonomy into a larger examination of power, ethics, and the costs of living with a life that others would kill to possess.
Ultimately, the narrative threads weave together a nuanced portrait of fear, resilience, and the precarious balance between protection and predation. Kei’s journey from a reluctant survivor to a figure who must navigate clandestine alliances, moral compromises, and deadly confrontations offers a calm, patient, and clear-eyed look at a world where immortality is both a gift and a curse, and where every choice echoes with the possibility of life or loss. The tension remains high, the questions persist, and the world of Ajin continues to unfold with each startling breach of the ordinary.
