During the Meiji period, the imposing Gokumonjou prison sits on a vast lake, built to address rising crime. The Kumou brothers – the peculiar Tenka, the valiant Soramaru, and the naive Chuutarou – serve as its ferrymen, leading relatively peaceful lives in the misty town of Oumi with their housekeeper, Shirasu Kinjou. However, Oumi holds a dark secret: the legend of Orochi, a fearsome serpentine beast that resurfaces every three hundred years within a human host. The brothers are unaware that their family's true purpose is to contain Orochi and prevent its full revival, or risk global destruction.
