Air Mail 1932

Pilot Mike Miller, Ralph Bellamy, owns and operates Desert Airport, an air mail base at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. He leads a tight-knit crew of young pilots who brave dangerous weather and treacherous terrain to deliver mail across rugged skies, forging a bond that keeps them together through peril, fatigue, and the unyielding demands of their profession.

When Joe Barnes, Ward Bond, crashes at the base, the team rushes to salvage the precious mail from the burning wreck. Mike consoles his girlfriend Ruth, Gloria Stuart, who is also Joe’s sister, while facing the grim reality that a replacement is needed. He chooses the daring but reckless Duke Talbot, Pat O’Brien, to fly the last leg, hoping his nerve might compensate for the risks.

Duke is a capable aviator, but his bravado and an affair with Irene Wilkins, Lilian Bond, wife of fellow pilot ‘Dizzy’ Wilkins, [Russell Hopton], threatens the group’s harmony. The cockpit tensions mirror the looming storm, and a blinding snowstorm seals Dizzy’s fate as he crashes and dies, leaving the team to endure the sudden loss together.

With Dizzy gone, Mike pushes ahead, taking the final leg himself despite doctors warning that his vision is deteriorating. A harsh blizzard surrounds the route, and he crashes as well, his distress call revealing that he is alive but trapped in an inaccessible mountain valley.

Duke volunteers for a daring rescue, piloting another craft into the remote valley. He lands rough but manages to fly out with Mike on board, closing the distance to Desert Airport. Yet the danger isn’t over: as they approach the base, Duke realizes he cannot land safely, so he orders Mike to parachute before he himself crash-lands. The ground crew pull Duke from the wreck, leaving him badly injured but alive, while Mike’s fate in the valley remains a tense possibility for a future reunion.
