After his aircraft crashes in a thunderstorm, Jim Blaine, [Richard Barthelmess], a commercial pilot, is blackballed and unable to find work flying. Facing a grim stretch, he takes a quieter job as a bank teller, a far cry from the open skies he loves, until he meets Jill Collins, [Sally Eilers], a barnstorming parachutist who works with her daredevil pilot brother. Jill’s fearless energy draws him in, and soon the pair become the center of a high-stakes aerial act that rekindles Jim’s longing for life beyond the desk.
When Jill’s brother is killed in a freak crash, Jim reveals his own hidden past and volunteers to replace the departed sibling in their act, stepping into a shared sky of risk and romance. As they travel through the Southwest, their growing bond moves from attraction to a physical intimacy that challenges Jim’s beliefs about what his life should look like.
Jim’s outlook hardens when he realizes that his risky lifestyle may preclude a wife and family, while Jill yearns for marriage and stability. Into this delicate balance steps Neil ‘Bud’ Blaine, [Tom Brown], Jim’s brother, who joins them and immediately finds himself drawn to Jill but respects his brother’s connection. A new orbit forms around their troupe until another freak accident sends Jim to the hospital for a long convalescence, and upon rejoining the world he discovers Jill and Bud have married.
Anger and bitterness fuel a darker turn as Jim becomes a soldier of fortune, a life that costs him greatly—he loses an eye and a leg while flying for Communist rebels in China and Chile. After a long estrangement, he seeks reconciliation and heads to Cuba to rejoin Bud and Jill, only to learn that Bud’s aircraft has gone down in a storm in the Gulf of Mexico. With a narrow window to save Bud and the passengers, Jim volunteers to fly into the treacherous weather himself, putting everything on the line.
The rescue sequence unfolds with a tense, nerve-wracking effort to reach the crash site and pull everyone to safety. When Jim returns, fog blankets the city and he can’t land in the usual way. In a resourceful moment, the cars line up on an old airfield, using their headlights and horns to guide him down, creating a makeshift runway and a dramatic save. The ordeal reveals the depth of Bud’s love for Jill, prompting Jim to step back and leave town—this time on gentler terms with his brother and with a renewed sense of what family can mean.
