Flight to Tangier 1953

On a private flight, the pilot Hank Brady suddenly pulls a gun on his lone passenger, Franz Kovac, after switching the plane’s instruments to auto-pilot. Waiting at Tangier airport are another American pilot, Gil Walker; his French girlfriend Nicki and her companion Danzer; a woman named Susan Lane; and a police lieutenant, Lt. Luzon. The plane passes over the airport, then crashes and bursts into flames.

Captured by police while investigating the wreck, Gil Walker and Susan Lane are taken in to Col C.M. Wier for questioning. It is revealed that Gil had known Hank during the war and Susan had been engaged to him.

Suspicious characters follow them, led by Danzer, who forces his way into their car. It turns out Kovac was carrying forged documents worth a great deal of money. Danzer and his men tighten their grip, while the authorities—led by Lu­zon—press for answers.

Gil, Susan and Nicki are held by Danzer’s men, but they are found by the police, led by Luzon, who is shot and killed. Gil escapes from the ambush and disappears into the tangled web of loyalties and lies surrounding the wreck.

The plot thickens when Hank and Kovac both turn up again, having parachuted to safety from the plane. In a final confrontation, Hank and Susan are revealed to be US government agents working undercover; Hank is killed. During the ensuing gunfight, most of the gang, and Nicki, are killed, leaving a narrow path forward for those who survive.

Battered but free, Gil is ultimately cleared to go, and he and Susan board the same plane back to America, beginning a cautious new chapter after a perilous chain of betrayals, disguises, and evasive alliances.
