Charles Marquis Warren

Charles Marquis Warren was born on December 16, 1912, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he grew up as the son of a real estate broker and enjoyed the unique distinction of being the godson of legendary American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. He received his education at The Baltimore City College, graduating in 1930 before attending Princeton University, where he cultivated his passion for writing and penned the play No Sun, No Moon. This theatrical work caught the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1933, prompting Warren to relocate to Hollywood with the assistance of his godfather to begin his career as a staff writer. His early Hollywood credits included contributing to the screenplays of major productions such as Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) starring Charles Laughton and Clark Gable, and the classic musical Top Hat (1935) with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. After leaving Hollywood for New York City, Warren established himself as a successful fiction writer for pulp magazines, with several stories published in The Saturday Evening Post, including the works that would become the novels Only the Valiant and Bugles Are for Soldiers (later retitled Valley of the Shadow). In 1941, he married Anna Crawford Tootle, with whom he would have three daughters, and when World War II erupted, Warren served his country as a commander in the United States Navy's Photo Science Laboratory, receiving the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and five battle stars after being wounded by a Japanese grenade in the South Pacific theater in 1944.

Following his military service and recovery, Warren returned to Hollywood and carved out a significant niche as a screenwriter and director specializing in Westerns, beginning his directorial career with Little Big Horn (1951) and subsequently founding his own production company, Commander Films Corporation. He directed notable films including Hellgate (1952) and moved to Paramount Pictures where he worked on projects such as Pony Express starring Charlton Heston, the 3-D adventure Flight to Tangier, and Arrowhead. Warren's most significant television impact came in 1955 when he became the producer and director of CBS's landmark Western series Gunsmoke, personally producing the entire first season and directing the first 26 episodes before departing due to creative differences with producer Norman Macdonnell. He later established Emirau Productions, named after the World War II battle in which he was injured, producing films such as Trooper Hook featuring Joel McCrea and Barbara Stanwyck, as well as horror features like Back From the Dead and war films including Desert Hell. In 1959, Warren helped create and produce the long-running series Rawhide starring Clint Eastwood and Eric Fleming, while also contributing to other Western television series such as Gunslinger, The Iron Horse, and The Virginian. His final directorial efforts included the Elvis Presley vehicle Charro! (1969), and he died on August 11, 1990, at the age of 77 from a heart aneurysm, earning the distinction of burial at Arlington National Cemetery in recognition of his distinguished military service and contributions to American entertainment.
