Tension at Table Rock 1956

Wes Tancred, Richard Egan is vilified and immortalized in an unflattering song about a man shooting his best friend in the back after he killed a man many believed was his friend. In truth, the man Wes killed was reaching for his gun as he stepped toward the door, but the town’s chorus paints a different, harsher picture. He leaves town and winds up working as a hostler at a Stagecoach Outpost, where he adopts an alias to stay under the radar and begins to form a quiet, protective bond with the father and son who run the outpost.

Three outlaws ride in with plans to rob the stagecoach when it arrives, setting off a deadly sequence. The father is killed in a tense showdown with the three outlaws, and Wes responds by killing them all. He then takes the boy, Jody Burrows, Billy Chapin, to live with his aunt and uncle, the Sheriff in Table Rock, Cameron Mitchell. A reckless band of herders driving a cattle drive rolls into town, bringing revelry and violence that culminates in the killing of a sodbuster. In the courtroom, testimony surfaces that the murder was self-defense because the ramrodder had placed a weapon in the victim’s hand. Both the Sheriff and Wes are aware of this, but the traumatized Sheriff, from a previous beating, files a report declaring self-defense. He revises the report only after Wes steps forward with testimony that challenges his account and compels him to face his fear.

The confrontation intensifies as Wes shoots down a hired gun who came to town to target the Sheriff; the Sheriff, in turn, shoots the man who hired the gunman when that gunman attempts to shoot Wes in the back. The film traces a delicate thread between justice and fear, keeping Wes’s quiet resolve at the center of a town steeped in rumor, loyalty, and danger.
