Lilian Bond

Lilian Bond (1908‑01‑18 – 1991‑01‑25) was a British‑American actress whose career spanned the transition from silent‑era stage productions to Hollywood's golden age of sound pictures. Born in London, England, she stepped onto the professional stage at the tender age of fourteen in the pantomime Dick Whittington and His Cat, and quickly progressed to the chorus of Piccadilly Revels. After honing her craft in the celebrated Earl Carroll Vanities, a lengthy run in Follow Thru, and multiple productions of the Ziegstrom Follies, she emigrated to the United States, where her charisma and dance abilities captured the attention of Broadway producers and film scouts alike. Her early American stage work cemented her reputation as a versatile performer capable of both comedic timing and dramatic poise, laying the groundwork for a prolific screen career that would begin a few years later.

Bond’s screen debut came in 1929 with the drama No More Children, and by 1931 she had already co‑starred in eight films, including the Tom Tyler western Rider of the Plains. In 1932 she was selected as one of the prestigious WAMPAS Baby Stars, sharing the honor with future icons such as Gloria Stuart and Ginger Rogers. Over the next two decades she appeared in 39 additional movies, ranging from leading roles to memorable uncredited parts. Notable performances include the witty chorus girl Gladys DuCane in James Whale’s The Old Dark House (1932) and the elegant socialite Lillie Langtry opposite Gary Cooper in The Westerner (1940). By the 1950s, Bond’s film opportunities dwindled, and she turned to television before formally retiring in 1958 at age fifty. Her personal life was equally eventful: she married three times—first to broker Sidney Smith (with a legal remarriage in 1936), then to actor Morton Lowry, and finally to screenwriter Michael Fessier, with whom she remained until his death in 1988. She bore two children and, after a long battle with heart disease, died of a heart attack in Reseda, California, in 1991.
