The Maze 1953

A Scotsman, Gerald MacTeam [Richard Carlson], abruptly breaks off his engagement to the beautiful Kitty [Veronica Hurst] after receiving word of his uncle’s death. He inherits a mysterious castle in the Scottish highlands and moves there to live with the castle servants, a turn of events that casts a shadow over his once straightforward life. Kitty refuses to accept the broken engagement and travels there with her aunt Edith Murray. When they arrive, they discover Gerald has suddenly aged and his manner has changed significantly, as if time itself has rearranged the world around him.

To understand what has happened, they arrange for a small circle of friends to visit, including Dr. Bert Dilling, hoping the medical minds among them can illuminate the troubling shifts in Gerald’s health and behavior. The group is united by concern, yet they are divided about the source of the mystery, sensing that the castle itself is wrapped in secrets that defy ordinary explanations. The atmosphere grows heavier with every passing night, and the old stone walls seem to keep watch over the strange occurrences that unfold within.

One night, Kitty and Edith steal a key to their locked bedroom and slip out into the hedge maze, drawn by the whispers of something not quite human. There, they discover Gerald and his servants tending to a frog-like monster, a scene that freezes them with shock and fear. The monster panics upon sensing intruders and bolts back toward the castle, hurling itself from a top-story balcony to its death, leaving behind more questions than answers.

Gerald explains that the amphibious creature was the actual 200-year-old master of the castle, Sir Roger MacTeam. Sir Roger never progressed beyond an amphibious embryonic stage, causing him to develop into a frog-like being whose only pleasure was swimming in the castle’s pond. Gerald and his ancestors were merely Sir Roger’s servants, bound to his will for generations. The creature’s demise breaks the strange bond, and with Sir Roger dead, Gerald is freed from his centuries-old obligation and can return to a normal life, if such a thing is possible within the echoing walls of the castle.
