In this gripping drama, FBI Agent Mark Putnam (Jack Huston), fresh out of the academy, finds himself thrust into the midst of a treacherous underworld as he arrives in Pikeville, a struggling mining town in rural Kentucky. Sent to investigate a local chop-shop ring and other illicit activities, Mark's eagerness to prove himself leads him down a perilous path. Accompanied by his wife Kathy (Sophie Lowe), Mark becomes increasingly entangled in the lives of the townspeople, including Susan Smith (Emilia Clarke), a downtrodden single mother with two young children.

Susan, divorced from her husband Cash (Johnny Knoxville) and struggling to make ends meet, finds solace in running night parties where customers can purchase and smoke drugs. Her brother Bones (Luke Spencer Roberts) helps facilitate the operations, but things take a deadly turn when one customer gets into a brawl with Bones, resulting in a shooting. Mark teams up with Sheriff Randy McCoy (Austin Hébert) to apprehend Bones at Susan's residence, uncovering a stash of 1000 tablets of Percocet in the process.

As Mark delves deeper into the world of organized crime, he becomes fast friends with the locals and seizes an opportunity to turn Cash into an informant. Under the guise of cutting a deal for his ex-husband, Mark finds himself drawn to Susan's charms, eventually offering her $10,000 to provide information on a local bank robber who has struck 11 times in four months. Susan agrees to cooperate, leading Mark and his team to capture the culprit - a drifter who had been renting a room in her apartment for months.

Susan's involvement with the FBI sparks a sense of empowerment, and she finds herself growing closer to Mark. They share a romantic night together, and Susan begins to open up to Kathy (Sophie Lowe), befriending her over coffee. As their relationship deepens, Mark becomes increasingly consumed by his latest case: the pot-smuggling operation run by Rufus Green (Brian Lee Franklin) from an abandoned coal mine.

As the truth begins to unravel, Cash's suspicions about Susan's infidelity are confirmed when he discovers her with someone else.
