Raghu Ramayya, Rajendra Prasad, is a principled editor of a daily newspaper who believes in using his influence for the good of others. He donates a substantial portion of his earnings to charity and lives a simple, morally driven life with his wife Bharati, Aamani, and their three children: Sekhar, Raja; Chinna, Ping Pong Surya; and Indira, Revathi. Raghu’s commitment to ethics colors every decision at home and in the newsroom, and he genuinely loves society as much as his own family.

Yet the peace of Raghu’s world is repeatedly tested by those around him. He has a close circle, including his best friend Subramanyam, Subhalekha Sudhakar, who constantly cautions him about the paths his loved ones might take. Raghu also protects Mastan in a time of religious strife, risking his own safety to stand by someone in need. A looming challenge comes from Kotaiah, Kota Srinivasa Rao, a hard-nosed moneylender who dares Raghu to prove that love is stronger than money. This test comes at a moment when Raghu’s family presses for financial support—especially as Indira secretly becomes involved with a man named Ravi, and Raghu learns that his children seek to secure their futures through wealth rather than virtue.

Indira, Revathi, is planning a future with Ravi, and Raghu greets the engagement with warmth, hosting a grand reception that signals his willingness to embrace happiness even as it strains his resources. Sekhar, Raja, aspires for a police post but resorts to bribery to secure it, while Chinna’s engineering dreams are funded by donations arranged by Kotaiah and Subramanyam, exposing Raghu to the friction between benevolence and graft. Ravi and Indira even press Raghu for money to fund a journey abroad, hoping to settle in the United States, and Raghu’s response—firm refusal—only deepens the rift within the family. The pressure mounts as Raghu’s children and their opportunistic circle push back with scorn, testing his belief that integrity should guide every choice.

When Raghu finally recognizes that his children are veering toward a hollow, money-driven path, he borrows to bridge the gap—first from his colleague Venkat Rao, G. Venkat Rao, Prem Kumar Patra, and then from Mastan, trusting that he can steer his family back to the values he holds dear. The loan from Venkat Rao remains unsettled, and Kotaiah, ever the stern debtor, demands repayment. Raghu’s efforts to honor his debt and uphold his ideals collide with the mounting pressure from those who doubt his stance. Subramanyam, Subhalekha Sudhakar, does what he can to shield Raghu’s reputation, and even Raghu’s mother, Raghu Ramayya’s mother, Annapoorna, stands by him in spirit, though the weight of the conflict falls most heavily on Raghu himself.

As the crisis reaches its peak, the public is drawn into Raghu’s life in an extraordinary way. The day of Raghu’s supposed departure arrives, and the crowd gathers to mourn a man who dedicated himself to others. Yet Raghu’s own children and his son-in-law are missing, trying to dodge debts that have caught up with them. Doctors arrive to collect the eyes Raghu had once donated, and they discover a note that hints at a last, painful resignation to defeat. Subramanyam reveals the truth to protect Raghu’s honor, while Bharati collapses with a dawning realization of her husband’s enduring virtue and the shadows cast by their children.

Raghu’s final journey unfolds as a quiet moral triumph. The procession grows from a personal rite into a testament of the community Raghu served, forcing his family to confront the consequences of their choices. Kotaiah blocks Sekhar from performing the funeral pyre until the debt is paid, and Sekhar leaves reluctantly, abandoning his father’s body for a moment. Then the public steps forward, paying the debt and recognizing Raghu’s integrity, while Kotaiah acknowledges the depth of Raghu’s influence and the affection he inspired. Bharati, moved by her husband’s steadfast ethics, urges the crowd to finish the ritual as a tribute to him, and the crowd complies.
