Britain is drawn into a long and ruinous conflict with France, the War of the Spanish Succession, a struggle that dominates politics at home and reshapes the royal court. Queen Anne remains largely under the sway of her ally Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough Alla Demidova, who leads the Whig faction and seeks to prolong the war to benefit herself and her husband, John Churchill, the duke and commander-in-chief of the British forces. The other side rallies around the Tories, led by Lord Bolingbroke [Kirill Lavrov], who argues that the bloodshed must end and that peace talks should begin. Anne’s loyalty tilts decisively toward the Whigs because Sarah’s influence reaches every corner of the court, leaving Bolingbroke with limited room to maneuver.

In this climate of courtly maneuvering, two young figures—Abigail Churchill and Artur Masham—enter the drama. Abigail, married to Masham’s boundless devotion, is caught between the pull of loyalty and the lure of a secure position at court. Masham, an impoverished nobleman and officer in the royal guards, loves Abigail but must contend with the constraints of his status and Sarah’s eye at court. Abigail works discreetly as Masham’s ally, while Masham himself is tempted by a chance at advancement that could change their lives.

A violent misstep loosens the strands of power: Masham kills a cousin of Bolingbroke in a duel, an act that temporarily complicates his standing and makes the relationship between Abigail and Masham more precarious. At the same time, Anne is beguiled by quieter temptations; a jeweller visiting Abigail quietly at her side offers a route to a seat at court, and Abigail and Masham decide to seize this opportunity rather than risk their love being discovered. Bolingbroke, always watching for any weakness in Sarah’s grip on the queen, discovers a secret connection: a letter from Sarah to Masham. He returns this letter to Sarah and leverages his knowledge to win Abigail a position at court, securing a crucial ally close to Anne.

Inside the palace, Anne’s days grow tedious with ritual while she privately confesses to Abigail that she has fallen in love with Masham. Abigail, torn between her love for Masham and her own ambition, looks to navigate the treacherous currents of court life, while Bolingbroke senses that a window has opened to topple Sarah’s influence. Soon, Bolingbroke finds a way to press his advantage: Sarah’s power at court begins to crack as Bolingbroke orchestrates a decisive moment when she interrupts a clandestine meeting between Anne and Masham. In a symbolic gesture, a simple glass of water becomes a catalyst in the drama, helping to precipitate Sarah’s fall from favor.

With Sarah removed from the center of power, Bolingbroke rises to lead the new government as Minister of Foreign Affairs and pushes forward with peace negotiations. The negotiations culminate in the Treaty of Utrecht, ending the war and redrawing the political landscape. In the aftermath, Abigail marries Arthur Masham and becomes the queen’s favorite, while Sarah’s influence wanes completely. Queen Anne is left standing apart from the triumphs of the realm she helped shape, a solitary figure whose heart longed for a simpler, shared happiness that the court could not offer.
