Scream 7's Original Story Plan Revealed by Skeet Ulrich
Actor Skeet Ulrich has disclosed that the initial vision for the 'Scream' franchise involved a three-film arc transforming his character's daughter, Sam Carpenter, into a killer. Following significant cast and crew exits, the project was reworked, leading to the return of legacy characters like Sidney Prescott for the sequel set to release in February 2026.

Legacy star Skeet Ulrich has shared startling details about the original narrative plan for the upcoming ‘Scream 7,’ which has undergone a significant creative overhaul. The sequel, scheduled for a theatrical release on February 27, 2026, was initially conceived to follow a three-picture character arc that would have fundamentally altered the direction of the new generation of films.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ulrich, who portrayed the original killer Billy Loomis, revealed the franchise’s initial trajectory. The plan for his character’s return in the recent sequels was part of a larger design to slowly turn his on-screen daughter, Sam Carpenter (played by Melissa Barrera), into a killer. This arc would have concluded in ‘Scream 7,’ mirroring her father’s villainous path. As Ulrich stated, “When we talked about coming back for 5, it was a three-picture arc for Billy Loomis to slowly turn his daughter into the killer. Obviously, those things didn’t pan out, given certain things that happened.”
This original vision was abandoned after a series of major production changes. The project was upended when Spyglass Media Group fired Melissa Barrera following her social media posts concerning Palestine. This was compounded by co-star Jenna Ortega’s decision to exit the project and director Christopher Landon’s subsequent departure. The studio then opted for a complete revamp, bringing in a new creative team.
The reconfigured ‘Scream 7’ will now serve as a revival for the franchise’s original heroes. The film will mark the return of Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, following her absence from ‘Scream VI’ reportedly due to a salary dispute. Other returning cast members include:
Notably, Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley will also reprise their roles from earlier films. The project is based on an original idea by Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt, the writers of the 2022 and 2023 sequels. Kevin Williamson, the franchise’s creator, will co-write and direct.
The scrapped three-part conclusion would have been a franchise first, definitively turning a central protagonist into the villain. While ‘Scream VI’ hinted at Sam’s potential viciousness, fully realizing this arc would have effectively ended the current storyline. This would have likely necessitated a full reboot, moving away from the beloved legacy characters that are a cornerstone of the series’ appeal. The new direction ensures the continuity of these familiar faces while setting a new course for the horror staple.
