Ryan Coogler Wanted Kraven the Hunter in Black Panther, Says Sony Said No

Director Ryan Coogler originally envisioned Kraven the Hunter as a key antagonist in the 2018 Marvel film Black Panther. During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, Coogler explained that his inspiration came from the Christopher Priest run of the Black Panther comics, which opens with a fight between Panther and Kraven. However, Sony Pictures, which owns the cinematic rights to all Spider-Man characters, vetoed the idea.

The Original Plan and the Veto

Coogler revealed that when he joined the project, the villain lineup of Ulysses Klaue and Erik Killmonger was already in place. He specifically asked Marvel if he could incorporate Kraven, a character he admired from Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Marvel checked with Sony, who responded with an unequivocal “Absolutely not.” This refusal forced Coogler to proceed with the established plan, which included Andy Serkis reprising his role as Klaue from Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Kraven’s Cinematic History and Solo Film

The desire to use Kraven is not unique to Coogler. Several directors have attempted to bring the character to the screen:

• Sam Raimi considered him for Spider-Man 4.
• Marc Webb looked at the villain for The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
• Jon Watts considered him for Tom Holland’s third film before the multiverse concept for Spider-Man: No Way Home was chosen.

Sony eventually moved forward with a solo film, Kraven the Hunter, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Announced in 2018, the film was released on December 10, 2024. It was a critical and commercial failure, earning a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing only $62 million worldwide against a potential loss of up to $70 million.

Outcome for Black Panther and the MCU

While disappointing for Coogler at the time, the inability to use Kraven ultimately benefited Black Panther. It strengthened the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s continuity by linking back to Age of Ultron and allowed for a more focused narrative. With Coogler set to write and direct a third Black Panther film, the article suggests Sony might now be more open to allowing the character to be re-introduced within the successful MCU framework.
