During World War II, a badly burned man is found in the Sahara Desert and cared for by a nurse, Hana. He recounts his passionate and complex love affair with Katharine Clifton, a married Englishwoman, revealing a tragic past filled with betrayal, political intrigue, and loss. As Hana tends to his physical and emotional wounds, she uncovers the identity of the mysterious stranger, Laszlo de Almasy, and the devastating events that led him to this isolated place.
