She went on to play significant roles in hit movies such as He Got Game (1998), Men in Black II (2002), and Rent (2005), among many other films. Dawson has also provided voice-over work for major studios like Disney/Marvel, Warner Bros./DC Comics, and ViacomCBS's Nickelodeon unit. Her involvement in comic book adaptations is notable, having played Gail in Sin City and voicing Diana Prince/Wonder Woman and Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in animated films. As of 2020, she portrayed Ahsoka Tano in the Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, and The Book of Boba Fett.

Her career began when Dawson was discovered by photographer Larry Clark and Harmony Korine, who decided that she was perfect for a part in his screenplay for the 1995 film Kids. From this point, her acting career took off, appearing in a range of films and performances, providing voice-overs, and manifesting strong performances in film and television adaptations of comic books. Dawson doesn't hesitate to partake in roles far from her comfort zone, continuously showcasing her versatility as an actress.
