Pinto Colvig

Pinto Colvig, born Vance DeBar Colvig on September 11, 1892 in Jacksonville, Oregon, was a multifaceted entertainer whose career spanned over five decades, weaving together clowning, cartooning, music, and voice work. The youngest of seven children of William Mason "Judge" Colvig and Adelaide Birdseye, he earned the nickname Pinto the Village Clown at age seven, a moniker that would become his professional identity. After brief stints at Medford High School and Oregon State University, where he played clarinet and drew cartoons for the campus newspaper, he joined the Pantages Theatre circuit in 1913 before moving to the Al G. Barnes Circus band as a clarinetist. His early years were a kaleidoscope of roles: newspaper cartoonist in Reno and Carson City, vaudeville chalk‑talk performer, and pioneering animator at the Animated Film Corporation in San Francisco, where he contributed to what is considered the world’s first feature‑length cartoon. By the early 1920s he had settled in Hollywood, working for Mack Sennett and later collaborating with Walter Lantz, creating characters such as Bolivar the Talking Ostrich and briefly voicing Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. In 1930 he signed an eight‑year contract with Walt Disney Productions, becoming the original voice of Goofy and providing sounds for Pluto, Practical Pig, Grumpy, Sleepy, and many other iconic characters, while also directing the Mickey Mouse short Mickey’s Amateurs. After a temporary departure from Disney in the late 1930s, Colvig lent his voice to Fleischer Studios’ Gulliver’s Travels, voiced Bluto in Popeye cartoons, and contributed to Warner Bros. and MGM projects, even appearing as a Munchkin in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. In the 1940s he embraced the role of Bozo the Clown for Capitol Records, extending the character to television and recording popular songs such as “Filbert the Frog.” Throughout his life he advocated for cigarette‑warning labels, a testament to his public‑health concern. Colvig’s final performance as Goofy was recorded for the Telephone Pavilion at Expo 67, just months before his death from lung cancer on October 3, 1967 at the Motion Picture Country Hospital in Los Angeles. He left behind a legacy of laughter, innovation, and a family that includes five children, most notably his son Vance Colvig Jr., who also portrayed Bozo the Clown.
