Pluto’s Judgement Day 1935

Pluto [Pinto Colvig] chases a kitten through the forest, a muddy puddle, and a window, and ends up tumbling straight into Mickey [Walt Disney] Mouse’s lap, turning Mickey’s house into a chaotic mess. The irritated owner scolds Pluto for his mean behavior toward cats, warning that he will have “plenty to answer for on (his) judgement day” if this continues.

Mickey Mouse then heads off to wash the kitten, while Pluto dozes contentedly in front of the fireplace.

In a dream that follows, a phantom cat goads Pluto into chasing him, overriding Mickey’s protests, and Pluto is drawn into a surreal realm. He enters a forest made of evil cat-like trees and a cat-head-shaped mountain trap, eventually sliding down into a bottomless pit where magical shackles bind him and the cats declare him “Public Enemy No. 1” for all his crimes against felines. The courtroom unfolds with testimony from a range of feline witnesses: a tubby cat recounts being chased and flattened by Pluto under a steamroller, a psychiatric patient is wheeled out to demonstrate the trauma caused by Pluto’s barking, and three young kittens sing of how Pluto stole their meals and drowned their Uncle Tom, with Tom’s nine ghosts briefly appearing to confirm the tale. The proceedings are led by the Cat Prosecutor Billy Bletcher and presided over by the Kitten / Cat Judge Clarence Nash.

Just as Pluto faces a horrific fate—being tied to a seat and lowered into flames by the furious feline crowd—a hot cinder from the fireplace strikes his rear and he wakes up. He bolts to the tub to soothe the burn, while Mickey continues washing the kitten. Seeing both creatures troubled, Mickey gently urges them to make peace, and, to his delight, Pluto and the kitten reconcile, ending the ordeal with a quiet, hopeful sense of forgiveness.
