Squatter’s Rights 1946

Chip and Dale wake up inside the wood stove they built as their home, tucked away in Mickey Mouse’s hunting shack, which appears unoccupied at first glance. The small, cramped space feels like a world apart, and the morning light filters through the chimney as they stretch and plan for the day ahead.

Just outside, Mickey Mouse and Pluto arrive for the hunting season, stepping into the cabin with quiet focus. The outdoors meets this tiny shelter, and the chipmunks suddenly face a precarious encounter with their most famous neighbors.

Pluto spots the stove and the chipmunks inside, and he signals to Mickey, who decides to smoke them out by building a fire. The plan is straightforward but carries a sense of urgency, as the chipmunks’ home is at stake.

Chip and Dale quickly realize the danger and slip from their hiding place, managing to blow out Mickey’s matches before the flames take hold. They stay under cover as the room grows warmer and the air thick with smoke.

From beneath the stove, the chipmunks grab a match and relight the space, burning Mickey’s foot and signaling their desperate bid to stay free. The moment forces Mickey to revisit his assumptions as he heads off to deal with the flare-up.

Mickey, misreading the scene, blames Pluto and scolds him for the mischief, turning his frustration toward a loyal companion rather than the true culprits.

After Mickey leaves to fetch more wood, Pluto chases Chip and Dale around the room, racing across a table and up to a mantel above the fireplace. The mischief becomes a playful chase, but the tension remains as the small world of the cabin braces for impact.

Pluto’s nose becomes stuck in the muzzle of the rifle hanging over the fireplace. As he tries to pull free, the table slides backward and Pluto falls. The rifle fires, narrowly missing him, and lands on his head and arm, briefly knocking him unconscious.

Chip and Dale pour ketchup on Pluto to make it look like he is bleeding, a hurried ruse to reclaim the space without breaking the uneasy peace inside the cabin.

Mickey returns after hearing the gunshot and is horrified to see Pluto apparently gravely wounded. Pluto wakes up and initially tries to comfort Mickey, but when he spots the ketchup, panic follows—he fears it is real blood.

Mickey carries Pluto off to seek help, while Chip and Dale celebrate their temporary win, their eyes bright with relief as they revel in regaining ownership of the property.
