The Moose Hunt 1931

Mickey Mouse Walt Disney takes his dog Pluto Pinto Colvig into the woods for a lighthearted hunting trip, hoping for a calm day in nature. The forest promises quiet moments, the rustle of leaves, and the camaraderie of a duo that has spent countless adventures together. Pluto, however, is easily distracted by the small wonders of the wild, from a stray flea to the scent of unseen creatures, and the woods quickly reveal a playful chaos beneath the surface of a simple trip.

Pluto’s attention keeps wandering as he sniffs around, and a cheeky flea finds him first. A curious encounter with a bird leads to a bite on the nose, and the dog’s curiosity only deepens as he investigates a raggedy scarecrow standing sentinel in the trees. A glove lands on Pluto’s tail in a moment that’s equal parts comic and unsettling, sending the terrier into a frantic bolt. He bounds away, colliding with Mickey and knocking him over, then vaults into a nearby stream. When Pluto resurfaces, more fleas latch onto his back, multiplying the mischief of the moment.

Back with his master, Pluto endures a brisk, if affectionate, training session. Mickey repeats a string of commands—lay down, roll over, sit up, and shake hands—each one met with eager obedience and a few comical delays. When Mickey asks Pluto to “speak,” the dog performs a surprising and theatrical impression, kneeling with outstretched paws and intoning a cheerful, old-fashioned exclamation:

Mammy!

The moment lands with a mix of humor and surprise, as Pluto’s performance bonds the pair even more tightly in their woodland misadventure.

Undeterred, Mickey tosses a stick for Pluto, who isn’t content with a mere branch and instead returns with a larger, heavier piece. In silhouette against the sky, antler-like twigs catch the light, and Mickey, misreading the scene, mistakes Pluto for a moose and fires a shot. The moment of anticipation turns to horror as he discovers Pluto lying still on the ground. Overcome with remorse, Mickey sobs, “Oh, what have I done? Don’t leave me, pal!” Pluto, ever the patient companion, gives him a wink from the audience’s side and softly growls:

Relief washes over Mickey when he realizes Pluto is alive, but their day is far from over. The moose’s distant call interrupts the moment, and the pair scrambles back to the hunt as Pluto resumes sniffing around. Yet the moose proves elusive, and Pluto’s keen senses miss the great animal entirely, letting the lumbering creature curl into the forest’s shadow. The moose, sensing their presence, begins to stalk them, creating a tense game of chase through the trees.

A quick, almost cartoonish shift in momentum occurs when Pluto playfully taps Mickey on the shoulder and points toward the moose, barking out the warning: “The moose! The moose!” The fear shakes Mickey’s hands, and his rifle wobbles apart at the seams, scattering into harmless pieces. What follows is a high-spirited escape where imagination and resourcefulness take the lead: Pluto’s flapping ears become an improvised propulsion system, and, in a remarkable turn, the two of them glide away from danger. The final image is jubilant and comic—a heroic flight with Mickey riding atop Pluto’s back, leaving the forest to its sounds and the echo of their laughter.
