The Pointer 1939

Mickey Mouse Walt Disney and Pluto Lee Millar head into the dense forest, camping gear in tow, ready to try their hand at hunting. Mickey studies an instructional book aloud, explaining how to point at game without moving, and he jokes about a victory dinner that would feature quail on toast and maybe a big juicy bear steak that night. He tosses aside a can of beans in favor of their target meal, and the pair venture deeper into the woods, Mickey armed with a shotgun and a can-do plan.

The first encounter proves trickier than expected: Pluto’s boundless excitement sends him tumbling into Mickey, knocking him over and scattering the quail before they can close in. Mickey scolds Pluto for the mishap, but his sternness softens as he recognizes Pluto is a mutt and may never quite master the discipline of a true pointer. They press on, separately this time, each moving through the trees with caution and a touch of comic peril.

Pluto, when a new flutter of quail appears, freezes perfectly in place, keeping still even as the birds hop onto him and tug at his fur. Meanwhile, Mickey—unaware that Pluto isn’t directly behind him—comes to a perilous moment when he hops down from a rock and unknowingly wakes a sleeping bear that begins to trail them. It isn’t until Mickey wheels around and spots Pluto still rigid in his pointer stance that he realizes the danger is real: a bear is quietly stalking them.

The bear seems belligerent at first glance, yet Mickey defuses the moment with a bold, humorous approach. He attempts to talk his way out of trouble, explaining that he and Pluto are merely hunting quail. In a playful cue of bravado, he introduces himself to the formidable animal, quipping, > I hope you’ve heard of me.

What follows is a frantic retreat across the landscape as the bear gives chase, forcing Mickey and Pluto to tear a path back toward their camp. The pursuit becomes a comic dance of dodges and near-misses, framed by rustling pines and the distant sounds of the forest. Eventually they make it back to the safety of their campsite, where, weary but relieved, they settle down to a simple supper of canned beans and the quiet satisfaction of surviving another misadventure together.
