The Eyes Have It 1945

Donald Duck Clarence Nash receives a package in the mail containing a slick hypnosis kit and a shiny pair of goggles. The instructions insist on selecting a subject of relatively low intelligence, so he chooses Pluto Pinto Colvig and slips the goggles on, eager to test the device on a living subject.

Once activated, Pluto is made to believe he is a succession of animals: first a tiny mouse, then a slow-moving turtle, then a noisy chicken. With each transformation, his actions and mannerisms twist just enough to be funny and a little alarming, giving the impression of creeping loss of control as the animal instincts take hold. The changes feel playful at first, but they rapidly become chaotic as Pluto’s behavior shifts with each new animal costume in his mind.

While in his chicken guise, Pluto runs afoul of a real rooster, and Donald, sensing trouble, decides to shift the spell once again—this time to make Pluto believe he is a mighty lion. The moment the transformation takes hold, Pluto swells with a ferocious energy, gritting teeth and roaring in a way that’s both comic and threatening. The rooster’s feistiness meets its match in Pluto’s sudden, exaggerated bravado, and the two collide in a wild fracas that sends feathers and dust flying.

The chase whirls Donald back toward the fray, and in the chaos the goggles are knocked from Pluto’s face, shattering on impact and scattering their magical mechanism into a thousand gleaming shards. The pair hurtles through the melee, and the house itself becomes a stage for the spectacle: furniture is knocked aside, walls groan under the strain, and the hypnotism manual is ripped and torn as Donald scrambles to salvage a way to undo the spell before Pluto hurts someone—or himself.

Desperation drives Donald to scan the wreckage for a cure, flipping through the ruined manual and muttering frantically as pieces of the device lie scattered on the floor. The situation spirals into a full-blown comic catastrophe as the hillside of chaos spills out into the open, culminating in a dramatic break through the rooftop. The two careen into the air and fall, forcing Donald to hit the ground unconscious while Pluto, now again a regular dog, returns to his natural self.

Pluto, sensing Donald’s vulnerability, nudges him with a tongue and a gentle lick to wake him, hoping the moment of calm might restore the illusion. But Donald, still convinced the lion remains in charge, bolts away in a frantic panic, leaving Pluto to watch him scramble off into the distance. The scene closes with Pluto turning toward the camera, a puzzled, almost innocent expression lingering on his face as the chaos of the day fades into memory.
