What's After the Movie
Milton Berle, born Mendel Berlinger on July 12, 1908 in Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood, grew up in a modest five‑story walk‑up with a German‑Jewish father who sold paint and a Polish‑Jewish mother who later changed her name to Sandra. He entered show business at the age of five after winning a Charlie Chaplin‑style contest, modeling for Buster Brown shoes and appearing in silent‑film bit parts such as The Perils of Pauline and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. By his teenage years he had adopted the stage name Milton Berle and was already mastering the vaudeville circuit as a master of ceremonies, a skill that later defined his television persona. In 1948 he launched NBC’s Texaco Star Theatre, a live variety show that turned him into “Mr. Television” and earned him the nicknames “Uncle Miltie” and “Mr. Television”; the program regularly captured up to 97 % of the television audience on Tuesday nights, causing theater ticket sales to plunge and even prompting municipal water usage investigations. Berle’s energetic slap‑stick, flamboyant costumes, and willingness to push boundaries—such as insisting on featuring the Four Step Brothers despite sponsor objections—made him the first true TV star and secured multiple Emmy Awards and two Hollywood Walk‑of‑Fame stars for radio and television. After his peak years, he continued to work in film, Broadway, and guest spots on shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel‑Air and The Muppet Show, while also becoming a prolific charitable performer with a Guinness World Record for the most charity shows by a single entertainer. His personal life was equally colorful: he married four times, most notably to Joyce Mathews, Ruth Cosgrove Rosenthal, and Lorna Adams, and fathered three children, including an adopted daughter Victoria and a son Bob Williams; he embraced both his Jewish heritage and later Christian Science beliefs. Berle’s influence endures as a pioneering figure who helped shape the language of American television comedy and demonstrated how a single performer could dominate an entire medium for an era.
