What's After the Movie
Mavis Villiers (born Mavis Clare Cooney on 10 December 1909 in Neutral Bay, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia) was an Australian‑born British actress whose career spanned more than five decades across stage, film and television. Emigrating to the United States with her family at the age of eleven, she quickly entered the silent‑film world in Hollywood, where her father worked as a technician and her brother Cecil began a career as a camera operator. Although many of her early child‑actress roles remain uncredited, Villiers secured her first credited appearance in the 1927 short comedy The Bum’s Rush. After her parents’ divorce, she and her mother relocated to London in 1933, where she would establish herself as a reliable character actress, appearing in productions such as the West End’s Damn Yankees (1957) and Noël Coward’s Sail Away (1962). Her Broadway debut came later, playing Aunt Lizzy Sweeney in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia Here I Come! (1966), a role she reprised for the 1975 film adaptation, her final screen performance. In addition to her theatrical work, Villiers built a substantial filmography that includes notable titles like Saloon Bar (1940), South American George (1941), Suddenly, Last Summer (1959) and the courtroom drama Victim (1961). She also appeared on several popular television series, ranging from the BBC’s Sunday Night Theatre to American classics such as The Twilight Zone and The Saint. Her personal life was marked by a brief marriage to Captain Donald Everett Miller, a pilot in the American Eagle Squadrons, who tragically died in a car accident in 1946. The union produced no children, and Villiers never remarried. She continued to work steadily until her death from pneumonia in a Paddington flat on 23 February 1976, aged 66, leaving behind a legacy of versatile performances that bridged the silent era to modern cinema.
