What's After the Movie
John Fitzgerald Kennedy, commonly known as JFK, was the 35th President of the United States, serving from 1961 until his tragic assassination in 1963. Born on May 29, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts, he grew up in the prominent Kennedy family, benefitting from a privileged upbringing that included elite education at Harvard University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in government in 1940. After graduation he joined the United States Naval Reserve, serving with distinction in World War II as commander of PT‑109 and later PT‑59, earning the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart for heroism after his boat was rammed and he rescued his crew. Following the war he briefly worked as a journalist for Hearst Newspapers before entering politics, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1946 and serving Massachusetts’s 11th district from 1947 to 1953. He then moved to the Senate, where he served from 1953 to 1960 and authored the Pulitzer‑winning Profiles in Courage, which highlighted senators who risked their careers for principle. Kennedy’s 1960 presidential campaign was historic for its televised debates, charismatic presence, and emphasis on a youthful New Frontier vision that promised civil rights, space exploration, and social reform. As president he created the Peace Corps, advanced the Alliance for Progress, navigated the Cuban Missile Crisis with a careful naval quarantine, and oversaw the failed Bay of Pigs invasion, all while confronting escalating tensions in Vietnam and the construction of the Berlin Wall. His inspiring speeches, such as “Ask not what your country can do for you,” left a lasting imprint on American political culture, and despite his short tenure he remains one of the most admired leaders in U.S. history, frequently ranking near the top in scholarly polls.
