In August 1961, the sudden closure of Berlin's sector borders divided the city, making escape to the West increasingly perilous. Just a year later, on September 14, 1962, a remarkable feat occurred: 29 people from East Germany successfully escaped to the West through a 135-meter tunnel. For over four months, students from West Berlin, including two Italians, secretly dug the tunnel. Facing financial difficulties early in the project, the tunnel builders ingeniously secured funding by selling exclusive film rights to NBC, an American television network.
