George Bancroft

George Bancroft (October 3, 1800 – January 17, 1891) was a towering figure of 19th‑century America, renowned as a historian, statesman, and diplomat who helped shape the nation’s educational and foreign‑policy institutions. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, into a family with deep New England roots, Bancroft entered Harvard at the astonishing age of thirteen and graduated in 1817 before pursuing graduate studies at the University of Göttingen, where he earned a doctorate in 1820. His early career combined teaching Greek at Harvard with ambitious educational reform, culminating in the co‑founding of the Round Hill School in 1823, a progressive experiment in secondary education that reflected his Romantic belief in universal knowledge. After a brief stint as a collector of customs in Boston, Bancroft entered national politics, serving as Secretary of the Navy under President James K. Polk (1845‑1846) where he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, guaranteeing a professional future for the Navy’s officer corps.
