John Cassavetes, Rowlands' husband, had an instrumental role in her career as she often worked with him in his films, notably 'A Woman Under the Influence' (1974) and 'Gloria' (1980), both earning her Oscar nominations. In November 2015, the Academy recognized her impactful performances, bestowing an Honorary Academy Award.

However, in 2015, she announced that she had generally retired from her acting pursuits. Rowlands' life came to an end in August 2024 due to complications of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 94.
