Another Woman 1988

Marion Post Gena Rowlands is a New York philosophy professor in her fifties who takes a leave of absence to write a new book. To find quiet amid ongoing construction in her building, she sublets a furnished apartment downtown, hoping the change of scenery will give her the space to think and breathe again.

From a neighboring office, Marion accidentally hears the raw, unfolding distress of a therapist’s sessions. The patient, Hope Mia Farrow, describes a life that feels increasingly hollow and inauthentic, a confession that begins to echo inside Marion. Hope’s words strike a chord, and Marion starts to question her own beliefs, her routines, and the way she has conducted her life.

As the days pass, Marion confronts the patterns she has repeated with people closest to her. Like a mirror held up to her, she sees how she has been unfair, unkind, and judgmental toward those around her: her unsuccessful brother Paul Harris Yulin and his wife Lynn Frances Conroy feel embarrassed by her, her old friend Claire Sandy Dennis feels eclipsed by her, and her first husband Sam Bruce Jay Friedman carries the memory of a life that ended in tragedy. Her stepdaughter Laura Martha Plimpton admires her yet resents her authority and temper, while the web of family ties tightens around Marion as she notices the growing distance between them.

She also faces a personal reckoning about her marriage to her second husband, Ken Ian Holm, which has grown unfulfilling, and the realization that she may have missed a once-in-a-lifetime chance for love with his best friend, Larry Gene Hackman. The sense of lost opportunities weighs heavily as she continues to listen to the echoes of other people’s lives and hears the sounds of her own past catching up with her.

A turning point arrives when Marion finally encounters the woman from the therapy sessions while standing before a Klimt painting called Hope. She wants to know more about the other woman, yet the conversation becomes a moment of startling honesty about her own life. She confronts a painful memory: an abortion from years earlier and the stark truth that many desires and possibilities may no longer be available to her at this stage of life.

The revelations push Marion to take action. She leaves Ken after catching him in an affair and makes a conscious choice to heal damaged relationships with Paul and Laura. With a renewed sense of agency, she begins to rebuild rather than retreat, choosing small, hopeful steps toward a kinder, more open way of living.
