No Other Woman 1933

In Pittsburgh, Anna Stanley yearns to break free from her life there and tells her boyfriend, Jim Stanley, that she will never marry a steelworker. Yet love and circumstance pull them toward marriage. After their wedding, Anna doesn’t abandon her dream; she quietly saves money and runs a boarding house to pad their savings, keeping a tight rein on every penny.

Her friend Joe discovers a way to create a permanent dye from the steel mill’s waste. Seeing an opportunity, Anna believes it could change their lives. [Jim Stanley] supports his wife, telling Joe that they can either sell the invention to the mill owners or partner to manufacture it themselves. Joe chooses the latter, and Jim builds the business and becomes very rich, living in a mansion with their young son Bobbie Stanley.

On a business trip to New York City, Margot, a glamorous woman, captivates Jim and he begins an affair. When Anna learns of the betrayal, she confronts him. Jim confesses he loves Margot and suggests divorce, but Anna refuses to grant one and secures a court hearing.

At the trial, bribed witnesses claim that Anna herself has a lover. Under the relentless questioning by Jim’s lawyer, Bonelli, she breaks down in tears. When she discovers she might lose custody of Bobbie, Anna claims that Jim is not the boy’s father. Jim then admits that he paid his servants to perjure themselves, and he is sentenced to jail. The scandal devastates the dye business, and Jim is left penniless.

After a year in prison, Jim is released but too ashamed to face his wife. He returns to the steel mill, but she finds him and embraces him.
