In 1987 Bayonne, New Jersey, Debby Miller, Uma Thurman, has been diagnosed with hysterical blindness, a condition where her sight fades in and out and life can feel unpredictable. A doctor encourages her to reconnect with friends and find moments of joy as a way to cope. To that end, she and her best friend, Juliette Lewis as Beth, head to Ollie’s, their favorite neighborhood bar, hoping to relax and meet someone who can brighten the day. The atmosphere at Ollie’s buzzes with chance encounters, and Debby’s frustration grows as Beth flirts with the bartender, leaving Debby feeling sidelined. When Debby steps outside, she unexpectedly crosses paths with Rick, Justin Chambers, a man who isn’t ready to commit but agrees to escort her back to her car. As a small token of gratitude, she buys him a drink and hints that she’ll be back at Ollie’s the next night.
The following day, the two run into each other again at Ollie’s, and Debby asks Rick to leave the bar with her for a new setting. The pair eventually wind up at Rick’s home, where the dynamic quickly becomes clear: Rick shows little interest in a real connection, while Debby tries to push the evening toward something more meaningful. In a bold moment meant to prove her desirability, Debby blurts out a brash claim about her sexual experience: > “I give a great blow job.” This blunt confession underlines how she’s yearning for genuine affection, even as Rick is looking for a casual encounter. The result leaves Debby feeling optimistic about love, but Rick’s interest remains focused on a one-night stand, and she returns home with her hopes unsettled.
Meanwhile, Debby’s mother, Virginia Miller, Gena Rowlands, has been dating an older man named Nick, Ben Gazzara, who pushes her toward Florida and a fresh start. When Nick suddenly dies of a heart attack, Virginia’s perspective on her life shifts dramatically. The tragedy prompts a broader reflection: for years she had been waiting for life to happen to her rather than seizing opportunities herself. The loss acts as a catalyst, nudging her to reassess what truly matters.
As the narrative unfolds, Debby, Beth, and Virginia each confront uncertainty and longing in their own ways, trading solace and strength as they navigate love, vulnerability, and the unpredictable tides of fate. The film weaves their stories together, showing how their bond and mutual support become the anchor they all need. In the end, the three women reach a shared understanding: stability might be elusive, but their connection to one another provides a resilient, necessary compass for moving forward. Through warmth, humor, and moments of quiet resilience, the trio discovers that family isn’t just blood—it’s the chosen closeness that carries them through life’s hardest moments.
