What's After the Movie
Chikage Awashima (淡島 千景), born Keiko Nakagawa on 24 February 1924 in Tokyo, Japan, was a celebrated Japanese film and stage actress whose career spanned more than seven decades. After graduating from the prestigious Takarazuka Music and Dance School, she joined the famed Takarazuka Revue, where she honed her performance skills before transitioning to the silver screen with Shochiku studios, making her film debut in 1950. Awashima quickly became a sought‑after talent, appearing in works by legendary directors such as Yasujirō Ozu, Mikio Naruse, Keisuke Kinoshita, Tadashi Imai, and Heinosuke Gosho, and she earned critical acclaim for her nuanced portrayals of complex female characters. Her performances garnered her two Blue Ribbon Awards for Best Actress—for Ten'ya wan'ya and Okusama ni goyojin in 1950 and for Marital Relations in 1955, as well as two Mainichi Film Awards, recognizing her work in Summer Clouds and Hotarubi in 1958. In addition to these honors, she received the Kinuyo Tanaka Award in 1997, underscoring her lasting impact on Japanese cinema. Awashima was also awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 1988 and the Order of the Precious Crown, 4th Class, Wisteria, in 1995, reflecting her contributions to Japanese culture and the arts. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s she expanded her repertoire to include television dramas, further demonstrating her versatility across media. She continued to act on stage well into her eighties, finally retiring in 2009 after a distinguished theatrical career that included both classic and contemporary productions. Sadly, she passed away from cancer on 16 February 2012, just eight days shy of her 88th birthday, leaving behind a legacy of artistic excellence that continues to inspire actors and audiences alike.
