Title Affinity

Title affinity is a data-driven marketing metric that measures the correlation in audience interest between different films, used to predict audience behavior and target advertising effectively.

Finding the Target Audience

One of the most critical challenges for a film distributor is accurately identifying and reaching the target audience for a new release. Title affinity (or ‘audience affinity’) is a form of market research that moves beyond simple genre demographics to create a more nuanced understanding of audience taste. It answers the question: ‘People who loved Movie A, what else are they highly likely to love?‘

How Affinity is Measured

Streaming services and market research firms like NRG or MarketCast gather and analyze massive datasets to calculate these correlations. The data comes from various sources:

  • Viewing Habits: On platforms like Netflix or Hulu, the service can directly see which shows and movies are watched by the same users.
  • Social Media Data: Analyzing which movie pages the same users follow or which trailers they engage with.
  • Surveys: Directly polling audiences about their viewing habits and their interest (‘intent to view’) in upcoming films.

By processing this data, an algorithm can determine, for example, that there is a 90% audience overlap between fans of the Fast & Furious franchise and fans of the Mission: Impossible franchise. This represents a very high title affinity.

Strategic Use in Film Marketing

Title affinity data is a cornerstone of modern film marketing and distribution strategy:

  • Targeted Advertising: If a new original sci-fi film shows a high affinity with Dune, the marketing team will target its digital ad buys to people who have shown interest in Dune, and purchase TV ad spots during broadcasts of that film.
  • Setting ‘Comps’: When pitching a film to studios or forecasting its box office, producers use ‘comparable titles,’ or ‘comps.’ Strong affinity data provides a quantitative argument that the audience for a past successful film is the same target market for their new project.
  • Recommendation Engines: The ‘More Like This’ and ‘Because you watched…’ features on every major streaming service are a direct and powerful application of title affinity algorithms, driving content discovery and user retention.
