A theme summary is an analytical tool that moves beyond the surface-level events of a story to articulate its deeper meaning and purpose. While a plot summary answers the question “What happens?”, a theme summary answers the question “What is this story really about?” It is a concise exploration of the abstract ideas, moral questions, and universal human experiences that the narrative is designed to investigate. It is the statement of the film’s central argument or thesis.

It is important to distinguish a film’s subject from its theme. A film’s subject might be “war,” but its theme is the specific statement or question it poses about war. For example:

• Theme: War is a crucible that forces individuals to confront the darkest parts of their own humanity.

Purpose and Application

The articulation of theme is central to the artistic integrity of a film:

• For Writers and Directors: A clear understanding of the theme serves as a creative North Star. It guides decision-making across all departments—from screenwriting and performance to cinematography and music—ensuring that every element of the film is working in concert to express the same core ideas.

How to Articulate Theme

A theme summary typically identifies the central concepts at play (e.g., love, loss, justice, identity, greed) and then explains how the protagonist’s journey and the plot’s resolution serve to comment on these concepts. For example, a theme summary of Jaws would move beyond the plot of “men hunt a shark” to state: “The film explores the theme of community versus bureaucracy, demonstrating how a town’s cynical and greedy leadership can endanger its citizens, forcing three disparate men to unite and confront a primal fear that the system refuses to acknowledge.”
