The Wisecracker archetype is incredibly versatile and can be found in various narrative roles:

• The Comic Relief Sidekick: In this classic form, the wisecracker is a secondary character who orbits the more serious protagonist. Their primary function is to comment on the absurdity of the plot from the sidelines, acting as an audience surrogate who points out how crazy the situation is. Rocket Raccoon in Guardians of the Galaxy or Donkey in the Shrek series are perfect examples.

• The Reluctant Hero: The Wisecracker can also be the protagonist, particularly in the action and adventure genres. In this iteration, their cynical wit is a core part of their anti-heroic persona. They are often world-weary individuals who are reluctantly dragged into a conflict and use sarcasm to express their exasperation. John McClane in Die Hard ("Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs...") and Han Solo in Star Wars are definitive examples of this type.

• The Fourth-Wall Breaker: A modern evolution of the archetype is the character who is so self-aware that their wisecracks are aimed directly at the audience, breaking the fourth wall to comment on the tropes of the film itself. Deadpool is the ultimate embodiment of this, using his humor to deconstruct the superhero genre from within.
