- Prioritize Importance: The key to using sound effects notes effectively is discretion. Only capitalize sounds that have a direct narrative function—sounds that cause a character reaction, reveal a piece of information, or significantly alter the mood of the scene.
- Avoid Over-Capitalization: A script where every minor sound is capitalized becomes difficult to read and loses the intended effect. The sound of a character SIPPING their coffee or their FINGERS TAPPING on a keyboard generally does not need to be emphasized unless it is central to the plot (e.g., the tapping is a secret code).
- Be Specific but Concise: The note should be for the sound itself, not a lengthy description. ‘The loud, sharp CRACK of a branch’ is effective. ‘The SUDDEN AND VERY LOUD NOISE OF A TWIG SNAPPING’ is overwritten.
