RGBWW Panel

An RGBWW panel is an LED lighting fixture that uses five different colored diodes—Red, Green, Blue, Warm White, and Cool White—to produce a vast spectrum of highly accurate colors.


The Evolution Beyond Simple Color

The advent of LED lighting on film sets brought incredible advantages in power efficiency, heat reduction, and portability. However, first-generation RGB (Red, Green, Blue) LED lights had a significant drawback: they were terrible at producing high-quality white light. While they could create millions of saturated colors by mixing the three primary diodes, creating white light by combining R, G, and B at full intensity resulted in a ‘gappy’ color spectrum. This meant that when this light hit an actor’s face or a colored object, it rendered colors—especially skin tones—in a strange and unflattering way, a problem measured by a low Color Rendering Index (CRI).

The introduction of the RGBWW LED panel was the solution to this problem. The innovation was to add two dedicated channels of white light-emitting diodes to the fixture: one set of ‘Warm White’ (WW) diodes, typically balanced to around 3200 Kelvin (the color of traditional tungsten lights), and one set of ‘Cool White’ (CW) diodes, balanced to around 5600 Kelvin (the color of daylight). This architecture allows the light to function in two distinct modes: one for creating vibrant, saturated colors using the RGB diodes, and another for producing beautiful, full-spectrum white light using the dedicated white diodes.

Unprecedented Versatility and Control

The five-diode system gives cinematographers and gaffers a level of control that was once unimaginable. A single RGBWW panel can replace multiple different types of older lights, dramatically speeding up the workflow on set.

  • CCT (Correlated Color Temperature) Mode: In this mode, the fixture produces high-quality white light. By mixing the output of the Warm White and Cool White diodes, the light’s color temperature can be precisely ‘dialed in’ to any point between the two extremes (e.g., from 2,800K to 10,000K). This allows a cinematographer to perfectly match the color of ambient light on location or to create subtle warm or cool looks without ever touching a physical gel.

  • HSI (Hue, Saturation, Intensity) Mode: In this mode, the fixture uses its Red, Green, and Blue diodes to create virtually any color imaginable. The user can select a specific hue on a 360-degree color wheel, adjust its saturation from a pastel shade to a deep, rich color, and control its brightness.

  • Effects Mode: Modern RGBWW panels almost always include a built-in effects engine capable of simulating complex, pre-programmed lighting effects like police sirens, fire flicker, lightning flashes, or the glow from a television screen. This adds another layer of dynamic lighting possibilities without needing extra equipment.

This versatility means a single light in a gaffer’s kit can serve as a soft key light on an actor, a vibrant purple backlight for a music video, or a flickering fire effect for a campfire scene, all with a few button presses on a control panel or a smartphone app. This technology, exemplified by fixtures like the ARRI SkyPanel and Aputure Nova, has become a new industry standard.
