By keeping the relationship in the realm of subtext, the studio or network can profit from the interest of a queer-friendly audience while maintaining plausible deniability. This allows them to avoid potential backlash from more conservative viewers or censorship in international markets where LGBTQ+ content is restricted.

Critics argue that it tokenizes queer identity for financial gain without offering the validation and substance of genuine representation. For viewers who invest deeply in these relationships, the constant hinting followed by an ultimate denial can be a source of significant frustration and disappointment. The discourse around queerbaiting often dominates fan conversations for media where intense, same-sex friendships are central to the narrative, such as the dynamic between Finn and Poe in the Star Wars sequel trilogy or between Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in the BBC series Sherlock.
