  • Jitter: The variation in latency over time. High jitter means packets arrive at inconsistent intervals, which can cause buffer issues and choppy playback in video streams.
  • Packet Loss: The percentage of data packets that are lost in transit and fail to reach their destination. Even a small amount of packet loss can cause severe visual artifacts or a complete loss of signal if not properly corrected by a protocol like SRT.

A QoS Monitor’s job is to measure these metrics continuously and present them in an understandable format, typically a dashboard with graphs and status indicators. Its functions include:

  • Real-Time Visualization: Providing network engineers and production staff with an immediate, at-a-glance understanding of the network’s current state.
  • Alerting and Alarms: Automatically notifying support staff via email, SMS, or other alerts if any metric falls below a pre-defined threshold. For example, an alert can be triggered if latency exceeds 150ms or if packet loss rises above 0.1%.
  • Historical Analysis and Reporting: Logging performance data over time, which is invaluable for troubleshooting recurring issues, identifying network bottlenecks, and planning for future capacity needs.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Helping engineers quickly diagnose problems by pinpointing where in the network path a failure is occurring.
