The Prophet is a classic character archetype who serves as a conduit for knowledge that is hidden from the other characters. This character has the ability to see the future, interpret omens, or understand the true, underlying nature of the story’s conflict. They are often portrayed as outsiders—recluses, eccentrics, or outcasts—whose wisdom is initially ignored or dismissed by a skeptical society.

In storytelling, the Prophet is a powerful device for building suspense and foreshadowing future events. Their cryptic pronouncements provide the audience with hints of what is to come, creating a sense of dramatic irony and inevitability.

Narrative Functions

The Prophet archetype typically serves one of several key functions:

• The Guide: They provide the hero with a crucial piece of information or a cryptic clue that is essential for their quest. Their guidance is rarely straightforward and must be deciphered by the protagonist. (e.g., The Oracle in The Matrix).
• The Warner / ‘The Cassandra’: Named after the figure from Greek mythology, this is a prophet whose accurate and dire warnings of future disaster are tragically ignored by those in power. Their role is to highlight the hubris and blindness of the other characters. (e.g., the lone scientist who warns of impending doom in many disaster films).
• The Mad Seer: This character’s prophetic ability comes at the cost of their sanity. Their visions are real, but they are delivered in a frantic or unhinged manner, making it difficult for others to take them seriously.

Common Traits

Prophets are often depicted with physical traits that symbolize their inner vision. They may be blind, suggesting that their sight is turned inward or towards a different plane of reality. They often speak in riddles and metaphors, forcing the hero to engage with their wisdom on a deeper level. Their role is not to provide easy answers, but to challenge the protagonist to find the answers within themselves.
