• For Development and Studio Executives: A script reader will often write a plot summary as part of their “coverage” (a report on a submitted screenplay). This allows executives to quickly grasp the story and structure of a script without having to read the entire 120 pages.

Key Characteristics of a Good Plot Summary

• Objectivity: It avoids any form of interpretation, critique, or emotional language. It states what happens, not what the events mean or how they should make the audience feel.
• Chronological Order: It recounts the events in the order they unfold in the narrative.
• Focus on Major Beats: It does not get bogged down in subplots or minor details. A good summary includes the inciting incident, the major turning points of the rising action, the climax, and the resolution.
