The Architectural Blueprint of a Story

An outline summary, or simply an outline, is a foundational document in the screenwriting process. Unlike a prose story summary, which is designed to be read by others, an outline is primarily a tool for the writer. It serves as the story’s skeleton, allowing the writer to plan, structure, and troubleshoot the narrative before committing to writing the full screenplay. It focuses purely on the sequence of events and structural integrity.

Structure and Format

An outline is typically presented in a hierarchical list format. It is organized by the largest structural units first, then broken down into smaller and smaller components. A common hierarchy is:

1. Act: The major movements of the story (Act I, Act II, Act III).
2. Sequence: Major narrative blocks within each act (e.g., The Heist Sequence).
3. Scene: Individual scenes that make up each sequence.

Each entry in the outline is usually a single, concise sentence describing the primary action or event of that story component. For example:

    • 1. We meet LUKE SKYWALKER, a bored farm boy who dreams of adventure.
    • 2. Luke’s uncle buys two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO.
    • 3. While cleaning the droids, Luke stumbles upon a holographic message from PRINCESS LEIA.

The Writer’s Essential Tool

The value of an outline is immeasurable. It allows a writer to get a bird’s-eye view of their entire story, making it easy to spot pacing problems, plot holes, or structural weaknesses. It is far easier to rearrange bullet points in an outline than it is to rewrite 40 pages of a completed script. The outline is where the hard structural work of the story is done, creating a solid foundation upon which the more artistic layers of character, dialogue, and theme can be built.
