NFTs on the Bitcoin Blockchain
An Ordinal Inscription is a novel form of digital asset that functions like a Non-Fungible Token (NFT) but exists natively on the Bitcoin blockchain. The concept was introduced by developer Casey Rodarmor in January 2023 through the Ordinals protocol. The protocol works by leveraging two key updates to the Bitcoin network (SegWit and Taproot) to allow for the ‘inscription’ of data—such as images, text, or even software—onto a single, specific satoshi, which is the smallest denomination of a Bitcoin (1 BTC = 100,000,000 satoshis).
How Ordinal Theory Works
The protocol introduces a concept called Ordinal Theory, which provides a method for identifying and tracking each individual satoshi. It creates a numbering scheme that gives every single satoshi a unique serial number based on the order in which it was mined. This allows for a specific satoshi to be targeted and ‘inscribed’ with data. Key characteristics include:
- Immutability: Unlike many Ethereum-based NFTs where the metadata can be stored off-chain (e.g., on a server), the inscribed data of an Ordinal is part of the Bitcoin transaction’s witness data, making it as immutable and secure as the Bitcoin blockchain itself.
- Digital Artifacts: Proponents refer to Inscriptions as ‘digital artifacts’ rather than NFTs to differentiate them from the Ethereum standard. They are considered complete, self-contained assets on the chain.
This innovation was controversial, sparking debate within the Bitcoin community about the proper use of block space, but it also ignited a new wave of development and culture around creating and trading unique digital assets on the world’s oldest blockchain.
