The Soulless Automaton

In video games, an NPC, or “Non-Player Character,” is any character not controlled by the player. These are often background figures—shopkeepers, townsfolk, guards—who have a limited set of pre-programmed behaviors and a few repetitive lines of dialogue. They exist to make the world feel populated but lack the agency and dynamic nature of the player character.

The NPC meme applies this concept to real people. Represented visually by a grey, featureless Wojak face, the meme is used to derogatorily describe individuals who are perceived to lack independent thought, critical thinking, or an internal monologue. It suggests that these people are like video game automatons, simply repeating talking points and opinions they have absorbed from media or social groups without any genuine reflection.

While the meme has been used in various social and political contexts online, its terminology can be applied to film analysis. The term “NPC” can serve as a useful piece of critical shorthand to describe poorly written side characters in a movie. If a character seems to exist only to deliver a single piece of exposition, stands around in the background without any clear motivation, or reacts to events in a generic and unconvincing way, they might be criticized by viewers as having “NPC behavior.”
