A New Generation of Auteurs 🇹🇷
Following the decline of the Yeşilçam era—the golden age of Turkey’s mainstream studio cinema—a new generation of independent filmmakers emerged in the late 1990s and 2000s. This New Turkish Cinema was a deliberate turn away from commercial formulas and toward a more personal, introspective, and artistically ambitious mode of filmmaking, heavily influenced by the traditions of European art cinema.
The Masters of Contemplation
The movement is largely defined by a group of auteur directors who have become staples at the world’s most prestigious film festivals. The most celebrated of these is Nuri Bilge Ceylan. His films, such as the Palme d’Or winner Winter Sleep (2014) and Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (2011), are renowned for their breathtaking cinematography, long takes, philosophical depth, and patient exploration of human alienation and existential angst. Other key figures include Fatih Akın (Head-On) and Semih Kaplanoğlu (Honey).

- Existential and Philosophical Themes: A focus on intimate human dramas that explore complex themes of loneliness, communication (or the lack thereof), memory, and the tension between tradition and modernity.
This movement has been a powerhouse on the international festival circuit, regularly winning top prizes at Cannes, Berlin, and Venice, and cementing the status of its directors as some of the most important voices in contemporary world cinema.
