Minimum Guarantee (MG): Overview
A Minimum Guarantee (MG) is an advance payment made by a distributor or sales agent to a producer in exchange for distribution rights to a film in specified territories. The MG represents a floor against future box office or ancillary revenues; the producer retains any upside beyond the guarantee once distribution fees and expenses are recouped. Guarantees are negotiated based on comparable titles, talent attachments, and anticipated market performance.
MGs are typically held in escrow or a collection account until release, then applied against gross receipts after deduction of distribution and marketing costs.
Role in Film Financing
Producers often use MGs as a collateral source for gap or bridge loans, pledging the guaranteed amount to secure financing. Lenders view MGs as firm commitments—reflecting the distributor’s confidence in the project—and apply them toward debt repayment schedules.
In many co‑production deals, multiple MGs may be secured for different territories, diversifying revenue risk. The structure and timing of MG payments—partial on signing, balance on delivery—are critical negotiation points that influence production cash flow and completion bonding requirements.
